Broad Beans (Vicia faba) are hardy, productive vegetable plants. An especially beautiful member of our collection, Broad Bean ‘Crimson Flowered’ is adored for its deep crimson blooms, reliable harvests, and richly flavoured beans. This heritage-style variety produces thick green pods packed with plump, pale green beans that are tender and delicious when picked young. The dramatic flowers add exceptional ornamental value to the vegetable garden while also attracting pollinators, making this variety as decorative as it is productive. Traditionally grown in cottage gardens, crimson-flowered broad beans remain a favourite for combining beauty with generous cropping.
Thriving in fertile, moisture-retentive yet well-drained soil, ‘Crimson Flowered’ grows best in a sunny, sheltered position with protection from strong winds. Plants benefit from regular watering during flowering and pod development to encourage fuller crops through late spring and summer. Taller stems may require light staking or string support to prevent bending when laden with pods. Pinching out the growing tips once the first pods have formed can improve airflow and help deter blackfly infestations. Harvest pods while young for the sweetest flavour and continue picking regularly to extend production. Combining ornamental flowers with delicious harvests, Broad Bean ‘Crimson Flowered’ is a beautiful and rewarding addition to any kitchen garden.
Supplied in approx. 1 litre containers.
