Acer rubrum ‘Red Sunset’ is the sort of tree that makes autumn worth waiting for. After spending spring and summer clothed in handsome green, three-lobed leaves, the foliage undergoes a spectacular transformation, turning glowing shades of orange-red through to brilliant scarlet before it falls.
Also known as ‘Franksred’, this selection of the North American Red Maple develops an upright, well-branched crown and eventually becomes a substantial tree, making it best suited to medium and larger gardens. Plant it where its autumn display can be properly appreciated, perhaps standing proudly in a lawn or forming an impressive focal point at the end of a garden.
There is interest before autumn too, with small reddish flowers appearing in spring. But it is that fiery finale that earns ‘Red Sunset’ its name and makes this a memorable tree for seasonal colour.

Plant in full sun or partial shade, preferably in a sheltered position with moist but well-drained, acid to neutral soil. Avoid strongly alkaline or very chalky ground, as this can affect healthy growth and the quality of the autumn colour. Water thoroughly and regularly while the tree establishes, particularly during warm, dry periods, and mulch around the base in spring to help conserve moisture, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Once established, little pruning is normally required beyond removing dead, damaged or poorly positioned branches. Give it plenty of room from the outset, as this is ultimately a large tree.
‘Red Sunset’ was developed by J. Frank Schmidt Jr. of J. Frank Schmidt & Son nursery in Oregon, USA, and introduced in 1966. Its cultivar name is ‘Franksred’, while Red Sunset became the name by which it is best known. It went on to become one of the classic selections of American Red Maple, prized especially for its dependable autumn colour.
