Allium Summer Drummer is a real wonder, producing huge fist-sized globes of small star-shaped, pinkish-purple flowers studded with white flashes atop tall stems around 150cm (5ft) high - these really are one to plant to impress! The blooms appear in summer above narrow, grey-green foliage.
When in flower, the blooms of these fabulous globes reach up to 20cm (8 inches) across in diameter with a lovely metallic sheen. Beneficial bees will find these Alliums a rich source of nectar; they look fantastic planted in combination with herbaceous plants such as Sedum and ornamental grasses like Stipa. Once they have finished flowering, the faded flowerheads provide further drama left in the border, providing sparkler-like skeletons; they're also useful for dried flower arrangements. The flowers of Allium Summer Drummer are also edible, making a great addition to seasonal salads.
Thriving in a bright sunny spot on well-drained soil, they look best planted in groups among ornamental grasses, or as part of a Mediterranean scheme. We recommend planting Summer Drummer Alliums between medium-sized herbaceous plants, which help to mask their foliage, which tends to fade as the flowers appear.
