Anemone hupehensis ‘Alando White’ brings a wonderfully fresh finish to the gardening year, producing elegant white flowers just when the border needs a new burst of interest. Each open bloom has softly overlapping petals surrounding a golden-yellow centre, creating a simple but striking display.
Commonly known as a Windflower, this graceful perennial carries its flowers on slender stems above a leafy mound of rich green foliage. The blooms seem to dance whenever there is a breeze, bringing movement and a lovely relaxed quality to late-season planting.
‘Alando White’ is particularly useful for illuminating partially shaded borders, where its pale flowers stand out beautifully amongst deeper greens. Try it alongside ferns, ornamental grasses and other autumn-flowering perennials, or allow several plants to mingle through an informal cottage-style border for an effortlessly natural display.

Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. A position with some shelter from strong winds is ideal, particularly as the flowering stems develop. Water regularly while newly planted and during prolonged dry periods, and apply a mulch of compost or well-rotted organic matter in spring to help retain moisture. Cut old stems back after flowering or leave them standing over winter before tidying the plant in early spring. Established clumps can spread gradually, so divide them in spring if they become overcrowded or begin travelling beyond their allotted space.
Windflowers get their wonderfully descriptive common name from the way their tall, slender flowering stems sway in even a gentle breeze. The botanical name Anemone also has an ancient association with wind, traditionally linked to the Greek word anemos, meaning “wind”.
