Anemone hupehensis ‘Princess Pink’ brings an enchanting touch of colour to the late-season garden. Its delicate, cup-shaped flowers open in soft blush pink, surrounding cheerful golden-yellow centres, while rounded, silvery-pink buds promise plenty more blooms to come.
Held on tall, wiry stems above handsome, deeply divided green foliage, the flowers have that wonderfully airy quality for which Windflowers are loved. They sway gently above neighbouring plants rather than creating a solid block of colour, making ‘Princess Pink’ particularly effective woven through relaxed cottage-style and mixed perennial borders.
This is also a lovely plant for keeping the garden interesting as summer moves towards autumn. Pair its gentle pink flowers with ornamental grasses, ferns and deeper autumnal shades, or plant several together to create a graceful drift that will return to perform year after year.

Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. A sheltered position is helpful for protecting the tall flowering stems from strong winds. Water regularly while newly planted and during prolonged dry spells, and mulch with compost or well-rotted organic matter in spring to help conserve soil moisture. Cut old flowering stems back once the display has finished, or leave them through winter and tidy the plant in early spring. Once established, Windflowers can gradually spread to form larger colonies, so divide clumps in spring if they become overcrowded or start moving beyond their intended space.
Despite often being called Japanese Anemones, Anemone hupehensis originates from China and takes its species name from Hubei province, historically known as Hupeh. It became closely associated with Japan after being cultivated there for centuries, which is how the familiar “Japanese Anemone” name became established in gardens.
