Aralia elata Variegata - Japanese Angelica Tree

This angelica tree is a much beloved ornamental specimen and is prized for its intricate foliage, flowers, and fruits. As a large deciduous shrub or small tree, it can grow up to 8 metres tall but looks just a stunning when kept small in a container. Its main attraction is the beautiful, variegated leaves displaying a delicate, pale green centre which is outlined by white edges. The sculptural red stems contrast amazingly against this foliage and provide winter interest. Small white flowers bloom in dense clusters in early summer and late autumn, followed by a multitude of black berries. This intricate ornamental tree is stunning when used as a solitary container plant on a patio but works just as well in a border, adding structure and colour.

This plant is sensitive to light exposure preferring full or partial shade and should be planted in a sheltered area. It is best grown in moist but well-drained loam or sandy soil and can be reactive to acid and alkaline pHs.
