Keep the garden buzzing with colour as summer slips into autumn with Aster novi-belgii ‘New Hybrids’, a delightful mixture of classic Michaelmas daisies. Upright, leafy plants become topped with masses of cheerful daisy-like blooms, creating generous splashes of purple, pink and white, each flower set off by a sunny yellow centre.
These are wonderful plants for extending the border season. Tuck them among grasses and other late-flowering perennials, add them to an informal cottage garden, or grow a few extra for cutting and bringing indoors. Their branching, clump-forming growth gives the display plenty of substance, while the sheer number of flowers can turn a previously quiet corner into an autumn highlight.
As a mixed selection, individual plants can vary in flower colour, height and character, making a group planting particularly enjoyable.

Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Water regularly while plants establish and during prolonged dry spells, but avoid waterlogged conditions, particularly in winter. Taller plants may benefit from discreet staking if grown in an exposed position. An autumn mulch helps maintain good soil conditions, while dividing established clumps every few years in spring encourages fresh, vigorous growth. Once flowering has finished, stems can be cut back close to ground level in late autumn.
Gardeners have known these plants as asters for generations, but botanically there has been a name change. Aster novi-belgii is now classified as Symphyotrichum novi-belgii, part of a genus containing around 90 species, mostly originating in the Americas. The old name remains widely used in gardens and nurseries, along with the wonderfully traditional common name Michaelmas daisy.
