The species for the cultivated variety Cyathea 'Highland Lace' is primarily Sphaeropteris cooperi, it has also been referred to as Cyathea tomentosissima. Sphaeropteris cooperi is a type of tree fern, commonly known as Cooper's tree fern or the Australian tree fern.
Sphaeropteris cooperi
This is the scientifically accurate species for the 'Highland Lace' cultivar.
Cyathea tomentosissima
This name is also associated with 'Highland Lace', but it is a different species from New Guinea known as the dwarf woolly tree fern. The confusion likely stems from a shared common name and shared appearance. The cultivar 'Highland Lace' is often described as a compact variety with a lacy frond texture, which can also be a characteristic of C. cooperi.
