Clerodendrum trichotomum Purple Blaze - Harlequin Glory Bower

Here's something unusual, unique, pretty hard to come by, but very very special - and we think very underrated.

Originating in western China, Clerodendrum trichotomum Purple Blaze - or the easier to pronounce Harlequin Glory flower is a choice shrub or small tree that will delight the gardener with a few special effects through the year.

First and foremost, is a backdrop of fresh green foliage, often with new purple tips in Spring. This is then topped off by clusters of creamy white scented flowers, flushed pink in bud, during summer. Once flowering is finished, steel-blue fruits are revealed that are surrounded by a pink-maroon calyx. Next the leaves turn butter yellow and drop for winter, yet, the attractive starry fruits persist in their masses over the bare branches in to winter, making an enchanting show as the days get shorter.

Thriving in fertile, humus-rich well-drained soil in full sun and in partial shade, it is well suited if you do not have a full sun aspect, or even for a woodland style garden.

A true hidden gem for the garden that is seldom found in mainstream garden centres, we think this is perfect in every way.
