Create a show-stopping focal point with the towering Dahlia imperialis, also known as the Tree Dahlia. This majestic species produces elegant, single lavender-pink flowers with golden centres in late autumn. Its tall, bamboo-like stems and lush green foliage give a tropical feel, making it a striking addition to larger gardens or sheltered spots.
Best planted in full sun with rich, well-drained soil and protection from strong winds. Water regularly and mulch well to retain moisture. In colder regions, treat as tender, lift and store the tubers after the first frost. Pair with smaller dahlias or tropical-style foliage plants to complement its impressive scale and architectural beauty.

Supplied as tubers, the best time to plant is in April and May. To plant them, dig a hole at least 20-30cm square and around 20-30cm deep for each one. Cover the base of the hole with 10cms of compost, or manure and give it a good dousing with a full watering can and then plant the dahlia at a depth of 15-20cms. You will need a stout stake, not just a bamboo cane, to support each plant and it is a good idea to knock this in first and then place the plant by its side. It will need to be lifted in winter - once the foliage dies back simply dig it up and store in a cool, frost free location.
