Delphinium ‘Percival’ is a showstopper for anyone who loves the grandeur of a traditional herbaceous border. Part of the Pacific Giant group, it sends up magnificent spires packed with large, pure white flowers, creating tall columns of colour that can transform a summer planting scheme.
The crisp white blooms are particularly easy to combine with other plants. Use them to brighten a pastel border, contrast with deep blues and purples, or weave ‘Percival’ amongst roses and other cottage-garden favourites. Its upright habit also makes it invaluable for adding height towards the back of a border, drawing the eye upwards without taking up excessive ground space.
These impressive flower spikes are excellent for cutting too. With good care, plants can produce another flush of flowers later in the season, giving this garden classic an enjoyable encore.

Plant in full sun in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil, ideally in a position sheltered from strong winds. Water regularly during dry spells, as delphiniums perform best when they are not allowed to dry out during active growth. Apply a balanced feed in spring and mulch around the plant to help conserve moisture, keeping mulch clear of the crown. Tall flower spikes should be supported early with stakes or suitable plant supports before they become top-heavy. Cut faded spikes back after flowering and feed and water the plant to encourage a possible second display. Protect emerging spring growth from slugs and snails, which can be particularly fond of young delphinium shoots.
The name Delphinium comes from the Greek word delphis, meaning dolphin. Early botanists thought the flower buds resembled the shape of a dolphin, giving these stately border plants a surprisingly playful name. Pacific Giant delphiniums became especially popular for their exceptionally tall stems and densely packed flower spikes, qualities that still make them stars of traditional summer borders today.
