Wallflowers gained their familiar common name from their habit of growing happily in stony places, including the cracks and crevices of old walls. Erysimum cheiri has been cultivated in Britain for centuries, with its combination of richly scented flowers and early-season colour helping it become one of the traditional stars of the spring garden.
Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained soil, ideally in a sheltered position. Wallflowers cope with a range of soil types but dislike sitting in wet, waterlogged ground, particularly over winter. Water regularly after planting until established and keep container-grown plants watered during dry weather. Deadhead fading flowers to keep the display looking tidy and encourage the plant to put its energy into further growth. Wallflowers are generally short-lived plants, so they are often replaced after a few seasons when flowering begins to decline.
