Sarcococca hookeriana 'Purple Stem'

Sarcococca hookeriana ‘Purple Stem’ is an elegant evergreen shrub prized for its glossy, deep green foliage carried on distinctive purple-tinged stems, which add subtle colour and structure throughout the year. In winter, it produces delicate, creamy-white flowers that release a rich, sweet fragrance, bringing gardens to life when little else is in bloom. Its compact, gently arching habit makes it ideal for woodland-style plantings.

This sarcococca thrives in partial to full shade and prefers moist but well-drained soil, where it will form a dense, attractive shrub over time. It combines beautifully with shade-loving companions such as Helleborus orientalis for winter interest or evergreen foliage plants such as Skimmia japonica and Aucuba japonica for year-round structure. To maintain the plant, simply remove any damaged or straggly stems after flowering in late winter or early spring, allowing its naturally neat form to regenerate with minimal effort.
