Brighten up your garden as summer fades with Calluna vulgaris 'Marlies', a gorgeous, compact evergreen heather that brings a cheerful splash of rosy-pink colour to autumn planting schemes!
This charming variety produces an abundance of slender, upright flower spikes covered in rich pink buds, creating a wonderfully colourful display above its neat, finely textured green foliage. As a bud-flowering heather, 'Marlies' holds its colourful buds rather than opening them fully, helping the plant maintain its fresh, attractive appearance for an impressively long period.
Its naturally bushy, compact habit forms a lovely mound of evergreen foliage, providing texture and structure even when the flowering season has passed.
Perfect for brightening patio containers, edging pathways, filling rock gardens or creating colourful drifts in heather beds, 'Marlies' is a delightful choice for bringing warmth and character to the garden when many summer flowers are beginning to fade. Combine it with other heathers, ornamental grasses and autumn-flowering plants for a gorgeous seasonal display.

Supplied in approx 2 litre containers.

Calluna vulgaris is the only species in the genus Calluna, and its name comes from the Greek word kallynein, meaning 'to sweep', reflecting the traditional use of heather stems for making brooms. 'Marlies' belongs to the group of bud-flowering heathers, sometimes called 'bud bloomers', whose flowers remain closed. This unusual characteristic allows their colourful buds to retain their decorative appearance for much longer than those of many conventional flowering heathers.

Grow Calluna vulgaris 'Marlies' in full sun or light partial shade, ideally in acidic, well-drained soil. Heather prefers lime-free conditions, so avoid planting in alkaline or chalky ground. For patio containers, use an ericaceous compost and ensure pots have adequate drainage holes. Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged dry periods, preferably using rainwater in hard-water areas. Keep container-grown plants from drying out completely, particularly during warmer weather. Feeding is generally unnecessary in suitable garden soil, although potted plants may benefit from a light application of fertiliser formulated for ericaceous plants in spring. Lightly trim after the flowering display has finished to maintain a neat, bushy shape, taking care not to cut back into old, bare wood. This hardy evergreen appreciates an open position and dislikes prolonged waterlogging.
