Iris louisiana Black Gamecock

The striking and hardy perennial iris louisiana 'Black Gamecock' is well-known for its dramatic, deep purple to nearly black flowers. This iris stands out in any garden with its large, velvety blooms that contrast with a yellow signal. It blooms in late spring to early summer. The thick, sword-like green foliage makes a striking vertical accent that is ideal for bringing colour and texture to damp spaces like water gardens.

Plant in full sun to partial shade in moist, neutral to slightly acidic soil. Because it prefers consistently damp conditions, "Black Gamecock" is a great plant to plant next to ponds, streams, or in bog gardens. In particular during dry spells, water the soil frequently to maintain a constant moisture content. To keep clumps vigorous and encourage healthy growth, divide them every few years.
