Dense, bushy, evergreen shrub with large glossy, dark green leaves. It makes an excellent hedging plant, and can cope with deep shade under trees was well as full sun. Small white flowers are produced on spikes in mid-spring, followed by cherry red berries (harmful if eaten).

Position: full sun, partial shade or shade Soil: moist but well-drained soil, except shallow chalk

Garden care: When planting, incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole.

For hedging purposes, as they are so big and bushy, you can space them out a bit more than smaller sizes, so these are best set around 80-120cm (3-4ft) apart. This will give instant coverage and provide immediate privacy that will get even better as they grow and knit together in to a substantial hedge.

A good alternative to Leylandii if you are concerned about maintenance. These plants are quality potted stock, don't risk planting expensive jute root balled stock that will resent root disturbance and have trouble with establishment, particularly if their first summer is a hot, dry one!
