Morus nigra ‘King James’ is a magnificent Black Mulberry with history, character and delicious fruit all rolled into one. Through summer, its spreading branches become laden with plump mulberries that mature from red to a deep purple-black. Soft, juicy and richly flavoured when fully ripe, they are wonderful eaten fresh or turned into jams, desserts and other homemade treats.

The tree itself is every bit as appealing. Broad green leaves create a dense, leafy canopy, while older specimens develop beautifully gnarled branches and an unmistakable sense of permanence. With time, ‘King James’ becomes much more than a fruit tree, it is a genuine garden feature.

Give it a sunny position where there is space to spread and enjoy a tree that can reward you with summer harvests for many years to come.

Supplied in approx. 10 litre containers.

‘King James’ has a particularly colourful connection with British gardening history. It is associated with the old mulberry trees traditionally linked to King James I’s early 17th-century attempts to establish an English silk industry. There was just one rather important snag: silkworms favour the leaves of White Mulberry, Morus alba, rather than the Black Mulberry, Morus nigra, that became widely planted.

Plant in full sun in a warm, sheltered position with fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Allow plenty of space around the tree so its crown can develop naturally. Water regularly during the establishment period and during prolonged dry spells, particularly when fruit is developing. Mulching with well-rotted organic matter in spring will help conserve moisture and improve the soil. Established mulberries generally require little pruning, and unnecessary cutting is best avoided. If pruning is required, carry it out while the tree is fully dormant, as mulberries can bleed sap from pruning cuts made at other times. Ripe fruit can stain paving, furniture and clothing, so choose the planting position with this in mind.
