Poppy Plant 'Black Beauty' - Papaver somniferum

Flowering in early to mid-summer, Papaver somniferum 'Black Beauty' is a unique variety, renowned for its deep, velvety burgundy-black double blooms. Its richly layered petals create a ruffled appearance, offering  bold contrast in borders and a touch of sophistication. Plant in well-drained soil and full sun and enjoy this easy-to-grow poppy year after year as it will self seed to reappear in subsequent years.

Following flowering, the main use of these poppies comes into play: their seeds. The seeds of all somniferum type poppies (which go under several common names such as opium poppies, breadseed poppies, or peony poppies) are perfect to use on crusty bloomers or in other breads, cakes and kitchen bakes, providing a subtle nutty flavour. The empty dried heads are further prized for dried flower arrangements as a further use.
