Papaver somniferum ‘Maanzaad’ is a graceful and eye-catching annual variety that produces delicate, silky white blooms adorned with soft lilac-purple blotches at the base of each petal. Flowering in early to mid-summer, its elegant cup-shaped flowers rise above slender stems, gently swaying in the breeze and attracting pollinators to the garden.

Following flowering, the main use of these poppies comes into play, and that is their seeds. The seeds of all somniferum type poppies (which go under several common names such as opium poppies, breadseed poppies, or peony poppies) are perfect to use on crusty bloomers or in other breads, cakes and kitchen bakes, providing a subtle nutty flavour. The empty dried heads are further prized for dried flower arrangements as a further use.
