Papaver somniferum ‘Purple Peony’ produces sumptuous, fully double blooms packed with rich plum-purple petals. Flowering throughout late spring and summer, these dramatic blooms add depth, texture and rich colour to borders while attracting bees and beneficial pollinators.
Following flowering, the main use of these poppies comes into play: their seeds. The seeds of all somniferum type poppies (which go under several common names such as opium poppies, breadseed poppies, or peony poppies) are perfect to use on crusty bloomers or in other breads, cakes and kitchen bakes, providing a subtle nutty flavour. The empty dried heads are further prized for dried flower arrangements as a further use.
An excellent choice for cottage gardens, contemporary borders and cutting patches, this variety pairs beautifully with silver foliage plants and pale pink flowers for a wonderfully layered display. Requiring very little maintenance, it performs best when planted directly into sunny borders and left undisturbed. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun and water sparingly once established. Leave seed pods in place for attractive late-season structure and potential self-seeding displays.
Supplied in approx. 1 litre containers.
