Poppy Plant 'Victoria Cross' - Papaver somniferum

Also known as the Danish Flag, Papaver somniferum ‘Victoria Cross’ is a bold and eye-catching annual originating from Europe and Western Asia. This variety is unique as it features vivid scarlet-red petals dramatically marked with a contrasting white cross at the centre, surrounding a prominent green seed head. Flowering in early to mid-summer, these distinctive blooms add striking colour and are loved by pollinators, making them ideal for cottage gardens, wildlife areas and informal borders.
Following flowering, the main use of these poppies comes into play, and that is their seeds. The seeds of all somniferum type poppies (which go under several common names such as opium poppies, breadseed poppies, or peony poppies) are perfect to use on crusty bloomers or in other breads, cakes and kitchen bakes, providing a subtle nutty flavour. The empty dried heads are further prized for dried flower arrangements as a further use.
