Large Photinia fraseri Red Robin Shrub
Few evergreen shrubs put on a show quite like Photinia × fraseri ‘Red Robin’. Its famous new growth emerges in brilliant scarlet-red shades, standing out dramatically against the older glossy green foliage. As the leaves mature, their colour gradually deepens, while fresh shoots keep that distinctive red display returning through the growing season.
A large ‘Red Robin’ makes an impressive addition to the garden, bringing valuable height, structure and colour from day one. The botanical name Photinia comes from the Greek word photeinos, meaning “shining”, a reference to the glossy leaves found among members of the genus. Photinias belong to the rose family, Rosaceae, making ‘Red Robin’ a relative of familiar garden plants such as roses, apples, pears and hawthorns.
Plant Photinia ‘Red Robin’ in sun or partial shade, ideally in fertile, well-drained soil and somewhere with a little shelter from cold, drying winds. Water thoroughly after planting and keep it regularly watered while establishing, with additional watering during prolonged dry spells. Container-grown plants will need more frequent attention to watering and feeding. Established shrubs can be pruned in spring or summer to control their size and shape, with trimming also encouraging a fresh crop of colourful red leaves. Avoid pruning during frosty weather, as tender new growth can be vulnerable to cold. A spring mulch of well-rotted organic matter will help conserve moisture and support healthy growth.
