Runner Bean Painted Lady
Availability: In stock
Runner Beans (Phaseolus coccineus) are ornamental and highly productive vegetable plants. A traditional member of our collection, Runner Bean ‘Painted Lady’ is adored for its beautiful bi-coloured flowers, rich flavour, and dependable harvests. Producing long, slightly curved green pods, this heritage variety offers tender beans with a deliciously full, traditional runner bean taste. The striking red-and-white blooms have made ‘Painted Lady’ a cottage garden favourite since the 18th century, valued not only for its productivity but also for the unique colour it brings to the garden. Left to mature fully, the pods also produce attractive black seeds splashed with pink markings.
Thriving in fertile, moisture-retentive yet well-drained soil, ‘Painted Lady’ grows best in a sunny, sheltered position with sturdy canes or trellis support for climbing. Keep plants consistently watered during flowering and pod development to encourage strong growth and prolonged cropping through summer and into early autumn. Pinching out the growing tips once stems reach the top of their supports helps maintain manageable growth and promotes heavier pod production. Pick beans regularly while young and tender to keep plants producing continuously, and remove older pods promptly to encourage further flowering. Combining ornamental beauty, heritage charm, and reliable harvests, Runner Bean ‘Painted Lady’ is a superb addition to both decorative and productive kitchen gardens.
Supplied in approx. 1 litre containers.
