Cotinus coggygria 'Red Spirit' - Smoke Bush

Commonly known as the smoke bush, Cotinus has been a much loved deciduous shrub throughout the UK providing gardens with stunning autumnal foliage as well as unique summer blooms. ‘Red Spirit’ gets its name from its amazing red flowers which bloom all the way from summer to autumn, displaying clusters of small and delicate red flowers which resemble the almost translucent and soft look of smoke. Its large oblong green leaves appear in spring and are held on extended petioles borne in circles around the upright stems. Then in autumn they gradually turn vibrant shades of red and purple before they fall, with the leaves shining in late sun and forming a much needed seasonal display. This shrub has an ultimate height and spread of 5 metres and responds amazingly to pruning. Well suited for placement with a mixed border, ‘Red Spirit’ contrasts beautifully with summer flower shrubs and provides architectural structure. 

We recommend you place this shrub in full sun or partial shade as it will establish well and look amazing in the bright sunlight. It prefers moist but well-drained soil and is hardy so can be planted in exposed or sheltered gardens.
