Tradescantia Zebrina - Silver Inch Plant
Availability: In stock
Tradescantia Zebrina is a fabulous foliage plant that certainly doesn't fade into the background. Its pointed leaves are boldly striped in silvery green and deeper green, while flashes of purple and rich purple undersides add even more colour as the stems twist and trail.
Naturally quick growing, Tradescantia zebrina soon develops a dense cascade of leafy stems. Pop it into a hanging pot, perch it on a shelf or let it spill from a planter and it will bring instant colour and movement to the room. Its compact leaves and flowing habit also make it brilliant for mixing with larger, upright houseplants.
Best of all, this good-looking houseplant doesn't demand complicated treatment. Regular trimming keeps the growth bushy and encourages plenty of fresh foliage, making it an excellent choice for beginners as well as established houseplant collectors.
Supplied in approx 12cm pot.

Keep Tradescantia zebrina in bright, indirect light for strong growth and the best foliage colouring, although it will tolerate some lighter shade. Grow it in a free-draining houseplant compost and water when the top layer has started to dry, allowing excess water to drain freely. Avoid leaving the compost permanently soggy and reduce watering during the cooler winter months. Feed occasionally with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser during spring and summer. Pinch or trim back long stems whenever needed to maintain a fuller, bushier shape. Keep it in normal warm household conditions and away from cold draughts.
The name zebrina refers to the plant's distinctive striped leaves, which bring to mind the markings of a zebra. Tradescantia zebrina is native to Mexico and parts of Central America, and its stems have a useful trick too: sections readily produce roots at their nodes, which is one reason this plant is so famously easy to propagate.
