Bring a wonderful combination of flowers, berries and autumn colour to your garden with Viburnum opulus 'Compactum', a charming, compact form of the much-loved Guelder Rose.
In late spring and early summer, its leafy branches are decorated with generous clusters of delicate, creamy-white flowers. Each flattened flowerhead features tiny fertile blooms surrounded by a ring of larger, showy white florets, creating a beautiful lacecap effect.
As the seasons change, the display becomes even more impressive. The flowers give way to clusters of glossy, translucent-looking red berries that shine against the foliage, while the deeply lobed green leaves take on fiery shades of orange and red.
Naturally bushy and compact, this delightful shrub makes a lovely addition to mixed borders, wildlife-friendly gardens and smaller spaces where year-round interest is especially welcome.

Supplied in approx. 2-3 Litre containers, strong and bushy.

The Guelder Rose isn't actually a rose at all! It belongs to the Viburnum family and takes its common name from Gelderland in the Netherlands. Its distinctive flowerheads have a clever design: the large outer white flowers help attract pollinating insects to the smaller fertile flowers in the centre, which eventually develop into those gorgeous red berries. The berries are ornamental and should not be eaten.

Plant Viburnum opulus 'Compactum' in full sun or partial shade, in moderately fertile, humus-rich soil that is moist but well-drained. Water regularly during its first growing season, particularly in dry weather, and apply a layer of well-rotted compost or mulch in spring to help retain moisture. Established plants generally need little feeding or maintenance. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain a tidy shape, although leaving the flowerheads intact will allow the attractive red berries to develop. Fully hardy throughout the UK, this shrub typically reaches around 1–1.5 metres in height and spread.
