Viola ‘Yellow Blue Jump Up’ is a real little attention-grabber, producing masses of characterful flowers in a striking combination of sunny yellow and violet-blue. Each bloom has its own slightly different pattern, with deep whiskered markings around the centre adding even more personality.
Compact and naturally floriferous, these delightful violas are ideal for packing into patio pots, window boxes, hanging baskets or along the front of borders. Their low-growing habit makes them particularly useful for filling gaps and creating colourful displays without overwhelming neighbouring plants.
They look fantastic planted generously for a bold splash of colour, but are equally effective mixed with other seasonal favourites. Grow in sun or partial shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil or good-quality multipurpose compost. Keep container-grown plants watered regularly, particularly during dry spells, but avoid leaving them sitting in waterlogged compost. A regular liquid feed will help maintain a generous display of flowers. Deadhead faded blooms to encourage further flowering and keep plants looking tidy. Violas are well suited to cooler conditions, although plants in exposed containers may appreciate some protection during particularly severe winter weather.
Violas belong to the same botanical family as pansies, and the names are often used interchangeably in gardens. Violas generally produce smaller flowers than traditional large-flowered pansies, but they make up for their petite blooms with an impressively generous flowering habit. Their distinctive dark lines and markings are often called ‘whiskers’, giving those colourful little flower faces even more character.
