Acanthus leaves have inspired decorative designs in architecture for thousands of years. Their distinctive shape famously appears in the elaborate capitals of ancient Greek Corinthian columns, giving this handsome perennial a fascinating connection to classical history.
Grow Acanthus hungaricus 'White Lips' in full sun or partial shade, ideally in fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing, particularly during prolonged dry spells. Once established, plants are reasonably drought tolerant. Apply a mulch of well-rotted organic matter in spring and remove spent flower stems after flowering if desired. Cut back tired or dead foliage as necessary. Avoid disturbing established roots, as Acanthus develops a substantial root system and can be slow to settle after transplanting. Good drainage is particularly important during winter.
