Betula pendula Spider Alley - Contorted Birch Tree - circa 120-150cm
Availability: In stock
Betula pendula ‘Spider Alley’, commonly known as the Contorted Birch, is a unique ornamental tree celebrated for its twisted branches and luminous white bark. Even when bare in winter, its sculptural form creates strong architectural interest, while fresh green foliage in spring and summer softens its silhouette before turning warm yellow in autumn, adding seasonal drama to the garden.
This hardy birch thrives in full sun to light shade and prefers moist but well-drained soil; it requires minimal maintenance beyond removing any dead or crossing branches in late summer or early autumn. ‘Spider Alley’ pairs beautifully with shade-tolerant underplanting such as Helleborus, Heuchera, or spring bulbs like Narcissus, which highlight the tree’s pale trunk and enhance its elegant, naturalistic character.
Fantastic and Fascinating, just two very apt words to describe this hard-to-come-by cultivar of contorted willow - worthy of any home arboretum! Supplied in approx. 3 litre containers.

To ensure plenty of branching and a good shape we prune out the main leader of these at around the 1.5m metre mark during the tree production process in the nursery so you get plenty of branches generated from below this lower down the trunk, right where you want them to originate for a visual feast of colourful bark as the tree develops. It is then possible to create a single trunked tree by allowing only one main leader to grow, or you can create a multi-stemmed tree by more selective pruning.
