The tree - Pinus halepensis - Jerusalem Pine - produces narrow needles in a deep blue-green that grow in thick groups on the branches, giving the look of vibrant 'bottle brush' pine clusters.

In the Spring the tree will produce new shoots in shades of orange and brown. Pine Trees are evergreens, meaning they hold their needles all year round.

Before planting, place the pine seeds in a small pot of water and soak for 1-2 days. Once the seed has softened, place the seeds between layers of moist paper towels and place in a refrigerator and leave for 2 weeks allowing germination to occur. During this time ensure that the paper towel remains moist by misting with a spray bottle when needed.

After 2 weeks check the seed daily for growth, this may take a further 2 weeks. For seeds that do not sprout after several weeks, allow these to dry out and then repeat the above process.

Once the seed has a shoot, it can be removed from the refrigerator and planted. Open the bag of compost and empty the contents into a bowl, spray the compost lightly with water to dampen the seed bed. Place the seed in the centre of the bowl and press down gently (approx. 5cm deep) into the compost. Gently cover the seed over with a little compost using your finger. Place the bowl in a warm sunny position and spray the compost lightly daily to keep the seed bed mosit. Water little and often, do not let the compost dry out at any point and do not over water.

Once you seedling is showing through the compost, you can cover the compost with the slate chippings but do not cover the seedling over, the slate will help keep the compost moist.

The best time to sow bonsai seeds is the autumn, this way you follow natures time schedule,  however please note seeds can be sown all year round indoors.
