Equisetum japonica - Barred Horsetail

Equisetum is a plant that just loves being near or in the water.

This Horsetail is grown for its incredibly striking stems which are evergreen, cylindrical and bright green in colour, they are marked by black and white bands of nodes all the way up the stem. Unusually it does not produce any leaves but its multiple stems do all the required photosynthesis and they form impressive clumps that can sit in up to fifteen centimetres of water. Horsetails are great colonisers so plant in an aquatic basket sunk into the pond margin if space is tight.

Equisetum provide great cover and shelter for pond wildlife.
