Hydrangea anomala petiolaris - Climbing Hydrangea

Plant in moist but well-drained, fertile soil, ideally in partial shade. It is particularly useful for north and east-facing positions, although it can also grow in sunnier locations provided the soil remains reliably moist. Water regularly while the plant establishes and during prolonged dry spells, and apply an organic mulch in spring to help retain moisture. Young plants may appreciate initial guidance or support against their chosen surface, after which aerial roots allow them to cling for themselves. Pruning is generally minimal: shorten overlong shoots immediately after flowering, bearing in mind that flowers are carried on the previous year's growth.

Unlike most familiar hydrangeas, this one doesn't behave like a conventional shrub. Its stems produce small aerial roots that cling to suitable surfaces, allowing a mature plant to climb remarkably high without being continually tied in. Native to Japan and South Korea, it is one of those rare climbers that can turn a difficult shady wall into one of the garden's standout features.
