Musa basjoo - Hardy Japanese Banana Plants

Product ref: PP15302

Availability: In stock

This Musa basjoo - Japanese hardy banana - has striking foliage - displaying large bright green leaves that arch upwards from a main stem. A fantastic architectural banana plant will create a great impact in any garden!

It will bring a tropical atmosphere to your garden, and may even produce fruit.

The flowers are creamy yellow with large brown bracts and are arranged on a pendant spike.

Behind the flowers the small inedible bananas form.

It is a perennial although the top will die down in winter, and it will do best if offered some winter protection. Forming a dense bush with thick, fan like leaves spreading gloriously out through the air, it will create wonderful shadows on your patio. Hailing from Japan, it loves sunshine but it is reputedly hardy to -10 °C, and can take many positions growing in the UK climate!

The 'Japanese Hardy Banana' is also brilliant if planted into a large pot and will create a real tropical feel to your garden.

Supplied in approx. 10.5cm-1 litre containers.

It went bananas.

I have to say I was slightly underwhelmed when the little plant arrived in the post.
With not much hope of it ever looking like much I planted it in the garden.
One Summer seemed to be all it took. It's now huge.
The first winter I cosseted it with some insulation. Now, I don't think it's necessary. The leaves that fall back in the winter are probably insulation enough and it survives quite happily.
Thoroughly recommend it as stunning garden feature.

Beautiful banana plants

I bought 2 in September 2022 and repotted them on arrival. They grew until end Nov, stopped for 2 months, then started again from Feb. Repotted in March and have watched them grow into stunning plants. The largest leave is now 60cm long. They will be going outside in the summer. I definitely recommend them!
