Rhamnus alaternus 'Argenteovariegatus' - Buckhorn

Product ref: S25299

Availability: In stock

Commonly known as the Italian Buckthorn this evergreen shrub produces beautiful autumnal fruit and delicate foliage. Rhamnus alaternus originates from the shrubland of the Mediterranean and will give your garden the refined yet rugged aesthetic of Greek or Italian countryside. ‘Argenteovariegatus’ is a variegated variety with its small, ovate leaves a greyish-green in the middle with creamy-white margins making your shrub a lovely light colour all year round. Perfect in a mixed border the continuous foliage provides a lovely backdrop to contrast other plants against and displays small yellow flowers from February to April.

Glossy red berries emerge in autumn and gradually become darker ripening to a deep purple/black. This medium sized shrub has a maximum height and spread of 4 meters. Hardy in most UK climates this shrub can establish in exposed or sheltered gardens but should be placed away from especially harsh winter winds. Italian Buckthorn prefers full sun or partial shade and is drought tolerant, able to establish in well-drained soil.

Supplied in approx. 2 litre containers.
