The species Clethra alnifolia is native to eastern North America, and the common name “sweet pepperbush” refers to its wonderfully fragrant flowers and peppercorn-like fruits.
Grow in partial or dappled shade, or a shaded position, in fertile, humus-rich, acidic soil that stays moist but is well drained. Water regularly while the plant establishes and during dry spells, taking particular care not to let container-grown plants dry out.
Clethra alnifolia is naturally bushy and needs little routine pruning. In winter, remove dead or weak growth and, where needed, take out some older wood at the base while retaining strong replacement shoots. A mulch of organic matter helps conserve soil moisture and supports the humus-rich conditions it prefers.
