The hyacinth bean is an annual climber that produces beautiful purple-shaded mangetout-style pods in the summer and early autumn, complemented by delicate pink and purple flowers. Despite their exotic look, originating from South-East Asia, these stunning climbing plants are easy to grow and cultivate in the UK, creating a real talking point in the garden.
These plants will require a longer growing period and support for the vines, but are worth the extra effort. Treat them as you would Runner Beans and you won't go far wrong. Like most bean varieties, the more they are harvested when the beans are ready, the more they will produce, giving you a bountiful crop of interesting vegetables throughout the season.
These beans pods work brilliantly in traditional stir fry, flash-boiled and stirred through a salad, or simply eaten raw. Many people also grow them up a structure in a garden border, up to 2 metres tall, to benefit from the appearance of the attractive pods and flowers. The interest in what we have classed liberally as "Oriental Vegetables" increases year and year, with these being no exception. We hope you will be tempted to give something different a try.
Supplied in approx. 1 litre containers.
