Ilex aquifolium 'Argentea Marginata' - Female Silver Variegated Holly - Large circa 120cms
Availability: Out of stock
The classic Holly tree but with a twist, as the usual dark green leaves are variegated with a silver to yellow edge, these spiny tough leaves can be a purplish pink when young and in a medium sized garden, this shrub or tree will provide a strong evergreen border specimen. If planted as a couple, these plants produce masses of tiny flowers in summer which the female follows with bright red berries from autumn that endure throughout the winter, it does require a male plant for fertilisation so either buy two or as this is a British native plant, there is a good chance one may be nearby and cross pollinate for you.
Â
This Ilex will have a spread of around four metres and can reach a height of ten metres plus over a long period of time they are, however, happy to be pruned to maintain a height and shape. Ilex grows in either full sun or partial shade, they are hardy plants, growing in all aspects and will tolerate a wide range of soils if they do not waterlog.
Â
A great plant for blending into a mixed shrub and tree border or even use as a specimen plant, how about a couple either side of a gateway or vista. Due to their spiny leaves and dense crown, these plants are great for protecting boundaries and property and can be pruned to a hedge to make a formidable barrier.
