Juncus effusus 'Spiralis' - Corkscrew rush

A good trick to interesting pond side planting is to have as many shapes and textures of foliage as possible. This Juncus is a strong contributor to a ponds edge as it adds something a little bit different. Its forms clumps of evergreen corkscrewed stems, each one spirals, coil like and remains leafless and are a striking dark green.

In summer clusters of small brown flowers are born on leaf like stems further adding to the curious nature of this plant. Juncus loves being in permanently wet soil conditions and its roots will even be happy submerged in shallow water making it an ideal plant for pond margins. It is happy in either a sunny or partially shady position, it is very low maintenance.
