Astrantia major 'Claret' is a real border gem, producing masses of intricate, deep purplish-red flowers that seem to hover on slender stems above the foliage. Look closely and each bloom is a miniature work of art, with a pincushion-like centre surrounded by pointed, papery bracts in sumptuous claret tones.
Growing into a neat, bushy clump around 60cm tall, 'Claret' brings colour without looking heavy or overpowering. Its airy flower stems weave beautifully between other perennials and grasses, making it particularly at home in cottage gardens and relaxed mixed borders. It also works wonderfully beneath roses and shrubs, where its rich colouring provides an eye-catching contrast against softer pinks, whites and fresh greens.

Plant Astrantia 'Claret' in full sun or partial shade, in fertile, humus-rich soil that retains some moisture without becoming excessively dry. It is adaptable to a wide range of soil types, but performs particularly well where the roots can remain reasonably cool and moist. Water regularly while establishing and during prolonged hot, dry spells. A spring mulch of compost or well-rotted organic matter will help conserve moisture and enrich the soil. Deadhead fading flowers before they set seed to keep the plant looking tidy, and cut back old growth as required. Established clumps can also be divided in spring. This is a reliably hardy perennial, well suited to cold winters in UK gardens.

Astrantia has another rather charming common name, Hattie's pincushion, inspired by those tightly packed flower centres that resemble old-fashioned pincushions. What looks like a single elaborate flower is actually a compact cluster of many tiny flowers, surrounded by a decorative ruff of bracts. Astrantias belong to the Apiaceae family, so these refined garden perennials are botanical relatives of familiar plants such as carrots and parsley.
