Parrotia persica 'Vanessa' - Persian Ironwood

Persian Ironwood, or Parrotia persica 'Vanessa,' is a gorgeous deciduous tree that is well-known for its eye-catching fall colour and charming bark. Because 'Vanessa' is a columnar variety, it fits perfectly in narrow spaces and smaller gardens. The tree has lush, green leaves that change to brilliant shades of orange, red and yellow in the autumn. Before the leaves appear, it produces tiny, red flowers that resemble spiders in late winter or early spring, which subtly enhance the scenery. Year-round interest is created by the smooth, grey bark that exfoliates to reveal patches of pink, green, and cinnamon.

Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, fertile soil. Water frequently in the early years to create a broad, deep root system; as the tree gets older, cut back on the frequency.
