Pontederia cordata - Pickerel weed

The delightfully named Pickerel weed is a large perennial aquatic marginal plant.

It forms large heart shaped ovate leaves that are bright green coloured.

In late summer erect stems bearing deep blue flowers that form long spikes of tubular shaped florets are produced making for a stunning sight on a ponds edge.

Pontederia grows well if planted in an aquatic basket in a decent loam compost, sunk into a pond margin in a nice sunny aspect.

A valuable bonus to having this plant in a pond or boggy area is it is loved by or friends the Butterflies.
