Transform bare patches and shady corners into a lush carpet of greenery with Vinca major, the Greater Periwinkle. This vigorous evergreen perennial is a fantastic choice for bringing colour and life to those tricky garden spots where other plants may struggle.
From spring into summer, its trailing stems are sprinkled with delightful violet-blue flowers, each featuring five beautifully shaped petals surrounding a pale centre. These charming blooms stand out against a dense backdrop of glossy, rich green leaves, creating a fresh, colourful display.
With its naturally spreading habit, Vinca major is particularly effective beneath established trees, along banks and across larger borders, where its evergreen foliage provides attractive ground cover all year round.
Reliable, resilient and wonderfully versatile, this garden favourite is ideal for creating a leafy, flower-filled display with minimal effort.

Supplied in approx. 2-3 litre containers covered with buds and flowers in season.

The botanical name Vinca comes from the Latin vincire, meaning 'to bind', a reference to the plant's long, flexible stems, which were traditionally used for making garlands and wreaths. Greater Periwinkle has been cultivated in gardens for centuries, admired for its evergreen foliage and delicate blue flowers. Its remarkable ability to spread and form dense carpets also makes it an effective ground cover plant, although it is best planted where its enthusiastic growth can be managed.

Vinca major thrives in full sun or partial shade and will also tolerate deeper shade, although flowering is generally best in brighter positions. Plant in most reasonably fertile, well-drained soils, keeping the ground moist while plants establish. Once settled, it can tolerate periods of dryness, making it useful beneath trees and shrubs. Water during prolonged dry spells and apply a general-purpose fertiliser in spring if growth appears weak. Trim back wandering stems after flowering or whenever necessary to maintain a neat appearance and encourage dense, bushy growth. Fully hardy in most UK gardens, Greater Periwinkle spreads readily by rooting where its stems touch the soil, so regular trimming is recommended to prevent it overwhelming neighbouring plants.
